Earlier in the year, we introduced the importance of looking toward a PFAS-free future. Now, we’re here to share what we’ve been up to at Midlab, and how our new formulas and customer service solutions take a proactive approach to eliminating intentionally added PFAS.
Quick Recap: What are PFAS?
PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), also known as “forever chemicals,” are widely used in cleaning and beyond for their resistance to heat, water, and grease. In the commercial cleaning space, they can be found in products such as:
- Stain-resistant sprays for carpets
- Floor polishes & finishes
- Industrial degreasers
- Water-repellent treatments for fabrics
In particular, they have been commonly used in floor finishes to promote leveling and recoatability. One of the main concerns around PFAS is the persistence in the environment and health risks linked to the chemicals, including liver damage and cancer. Moving forward, eliminating intentionally added PFAS in products is critical for stronger, more sustainable cleaning and living.
PFAS Regulations in Commercial Cleaning
Several states (shown below) are introducing regulations to limit or ban PFAS in cleaning products. These laws often require manufacturers to disclose or eliminate the use of intentionally added PFAS to reduce contamination in water supplies and protect public health.
With over 10,000 litigation cases filed related to PFAS, most states are also exploring legislation to address these chemicals, pushing industries to seek PFAS alternatives for compliance.
Midlab’s Commitment to PFAS Alternatives
At Midlab, we’re dedicated to transitioning our cleaning products to formulas with no intentionally added PFAS to help support a healthier environment. While we avoid labeling products as “PFAS-free” due to the potential for trace amounts and the lack of government standards for such testing, our new formulas comply with the strictest regulations. With a future-minded regulatory team and a supply chain that uses raw materials free of intentionally added PFAS, we’re able to ensure compliance while meeting evolving customer needs.
Our team of innovators and industry experts have already developed four new floor care formulas that exclude intentionally added PFAS, continuing our commitment to sustainability without compromising on product performance for commercial floor care.
The Advantages of Alternatives to PFAS
Transitioning to products without intentionally added PFAS offers multiple advantages. Environmentally, it aligns distributors with eco-friendly practices, appealing to businesses and consumers focused on sustainability. It also ensures compliance with tightening regulations, helping distributors avoid penalties and potential product bans later.
Finally, offering products without intentional PFAS provides market differentiation, positioning distributors as forward-thinking and responsible, giving them a competitive edge in an increasingly eco-conscious marketplace.
